English Proficiency Requirements

Programmes in Malaysia are taught in English. Here is what most universities ask for, and what to do if you do not have a test yet.

Foundation

IELTS 4.0 to 5.0 or equivalent.

Diploma

IELTS 4.0 to 5.0 or equivalent.

Bachelor

IELTS 5.0 to 6.0 or equivalent. Health sciences often higher.

04

Master

IELTS 5.5 to 6.5 or equivalent.

05

PhD

IELTS 6.0 or higher, or equivalent.

Acceptance and minimum scores differ by university, so check with your counsellor before booking a test.

Yes, in many cases. Many universities offer their own English placement test, or a conditional offer that includes an intensive English course before your main programme starts.

Some universities exempt students who studied in English-medium schools or whose previous degree was taught in English. Exemptions are decided by each university.

IELTS, TOEFL and PTE results are usually accepted for 2 years from the test date.

  • Practise reading and listening every day
  • Write short essays and ask for feedback
  • Take at least one full practice test before the real exam
  • Book your test early so the result is ready before the application deadline
